Recommended Formal Photos for weddings

Formal photos on your wedding day explained!

Ok, so I thought I would write a short blog explaining the Formal Photo section of a wedding day.
As I bang on about 95% of the day being all natural, capturing the day as it unfolds without much interference; I get asked if I still shoot formal photos.. and if so, how many I suggest. So below I have explained the process! Let me know if this is helpful?

Formal Photos are definitely a much needed part of the day. They are great to look back at everyone together when the wedding has long gone. I often get asked ' how many formal photos would you recommend'? and although I know a lot of photographers advise on between 10 and 15, at the end of the day this is your wedding so you should definitely decide!

To help your decision:

-Knowing how long they take!! They sound super quick and easy but if you have been to other weddings you probably know the reality is often something else. I advise each photo would take minimum 2 minutes so if you have 10 formal images you would expect to spend 20 minutes on this section (although the full group photo will take longer than this to get everyone organised). And so 20 formal photos would take you up to around 40 mins! So this is definitely something to consider; especially when trying to plan times with your venue.
So how do we make group photos run as smooth as possible?!

I usually ask you to suggest a bridesmaid or best man to get on the case with helping me out, someone who has a loud voice......I am sure you know straight away who the best person for this job is! This works well as while I am photographing one group photo, they can be getting the next group rounded up and ready to go!

'Don't blame me for being late to the group photos'!

I do try add a little more fun and interaction in as much as possible also :)

So finally, my list of recommended group photos:

1. All guests
2. Bride and Groom with Brides family
3. Bride and Groom with grooms family
4. Bride and Groom with both sets of parents
5. Bride and Groom with Brides parents
6. Bride and Groom with Grooms parents
7. Bride and Groom with Grandparents
8. Bride and Groom with Groomsmen and Bridesmaids
9. Bride and Bridesmaids
10. Groom and Groomsmen

I hope this has been helpful!

Whether it is singing waiters, or just handing out some lyrics and having a good old sing-song / dance before your meal, I really do believe music can absolutely make a wedding - AND produce some bloody amazing photos at the same time (Keep me busy) !!!! Here you can see a few photos from Amy and Pauls wedding day at Scarborough Spa wedding venue - just look at the fun and energy! I would also like to point out that Groom Paul booked this singing waiter (Jack Ollett) and so bride Amy had absolutely no idea what was happening! The look on her face was priceless! Especially at the end when Jack sang Amy's absolute fave song! :) They also had the biggest conga line I have ever seen and it was just so much fun! (As you can see).

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! 🎉 Planning a small, intimate celebration is such a wonderful journey. Here are a few tips to help you get started: Define Your Vision: Sit down with your partner and discuss your vision for the day. Whether it's a cozy backgarden marquee wedding or an intimate venue, having a clear vision will guide your decisions. Choose a Venue: Look for venues that suit your guest count. Small guest lists open up unique possibilities, such as intimate restaurants, gardens, or boutique venues. Budget Planning: Having a smaller guest list offers flexibility with your budget. Direct your funds toward elements that hold the utmost importance for you. Consider prioritising professional photography or videography; these tangible memories are the lasting treasures from your special day. Time of Year, and Vendor Selection: A smaller wedding may allow for quicker planning. Choose a season that resonates with your vision, and swiftly connect with essential vendors to secure your preferred date. Ensure they have availability and explore suppliers whose offerings align seamlessly with your unique day. The intimate setting creates an opportunity to curate an experience that feels uniquely yours. Venue Location: Top tip: I have photographed a lot of small weddings that have decided to carve a little time into their day to visit a close-by location that holds sentimental value. This could add a unique and intimate touch to your memories. (See photo below).
